The Chairman of the Rose Hall Town Interim Management Committee (IMC) Bishwanauth Somrah has been arrested and charged after it was alleged that he assaulted a female resident.
Somrah, of Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Berbice, is accused of assaulting Wynette Trim-Griffith, the Secretary of the Rose Hall Town Anniversary and Development Organization (RHTADO). The incident is alleged to have occurred on Saturday, last, around 15:15 hrs, during the staging of the “Go Green” Street Fair and Exhibition which was being held on the Rose Hall Town main road.
According to information received the organization was in the process of staging the fair – for which they were granted permission by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Regional Administration among other relevant bodies ( letters seen by Kaieteur News) – when Somrah turned up with a police officer and instructed that the activity be stopped.
Somrah was reportedly shown the respective letters confirming that the relevant permission had been granted. The IMC Chairman allegedly did not find favour, and a confrontation then ensued during which time Trim-Griffith claims Somrah used racial and indecent language, poked her in the face and struck her on the cheek.
The matter was reported and Somrah was arrested and charged. He is scheduled to appear in court today.
