Dear Editor,
Kindly allow me to comment on GuySuCo’s comment on Dr Yesu Persaud’s remark: “Poor management and unnecessary political interference continue to plague Guyana’s struggling sugar industry.”
If I were GuySuCo, instead of trying to dispute Dr Persaud’s remark, I would have gone to Dr Persaud, the doyen of Caribbean businessmen, and seek his advice which he always generously and courteously affords to business colleagues.
By now, we all ought to know that Dr Persaud is always on target.
Angustora was one of Mr. Dupres’ spread of companies which went bankrupt a few years ago. With this kind of debacle, the Guyana taxpayer would have been burdened with a US$10 million debt had the arrangement between GuySuCo and CLICO/Angustora gone forward. Dr Persaud had shown an uncanny foresight.
From the time GuySuCo was talking with Angustora to now, the Skeldon Factory’s performance has been very disappointing to the point where President Jagdeo expressed a strong desire to go there and personally set things aright. If I were GuySuCo, I would humbly ask Dr Persaud’s advice, or better still, ask DDL to do a management contract to get the Skeldon Factory performing, if DDL could be persuaded to take on such a contract.
If the Skeldon Factory performs to the optimum, success would triumph in Guyana’s Sugar Industry, bringing prosperity to the country. GuySuCo must do a self-analysis and decide whether they could alone meet that awesome challenge without seeking the help of other talented Guyanese of goodwill.
