Minister of Housing and Water, Irfaan Ali, on Wednesday, last, commissioned a $57M water well at Parfait Harmonie, West Bank Demerara.
The well was built by Trinidad-based Water and Oil Well Services which had also constructed the Diamond well, back in 2009, for $55M.
The well is expected to serve also residents of La Grange and Westminster.
Region Three Chairman Julius Faerber, who was also present at the commissioning, urged residents to conserve water and make good use of the facility being provided by the Government.
GWI’s Executive Director of Capital Investment and Planning, Ramchand Jailal, said that the new well has a depth of 572 feet and the capacity to produce 144 cubic meters of potable water per hour.
The Parfait Harmonie area has also been earmarked for a new water treatment facility.
Reflecting on the progress made in the sector from 2006, Minister Ali said that access to potable water has moved from 20 to 45 percent and will continue gathering momentum as the government seeks to move from 45 percent to 75 percent by 2015.
“Every resident that will benefit from this facility, the Government has spent $15,600, translating this amount for every family, the Government has spent on your behalf $60, 600,” Minister Ali stated.
Meanwhile, the official is quoted as saying that the construction of a new access bridge to Parfait Harmonie was recently awarded and the contractor is at present mobilising equipment to commence construction.
That bridge is the main link between Canal Number One and the Housing Scheme, but has been deteriorating rapidly because of heavy traffic.
“We have also set aside over $380M for the construction of an alternative access to Parfait Harmonie from the junction at the Demerara Harbour Bridge to the scheme,” Ali disclosed.
