A few weeks ago, over 50 teams were in the reckoning seeking participation in the history making Guinness Greatest of the Streets football tournament which made its way to the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden for the first time.
Now, it is time for the final four teams to tangle with a play in the championship game set for Sunday and a cheque for a whopping $400,000 at stake for the winner; $250,000 is guaranteed for the loser.
The intensity, rivalry and energy expected in tomorrow’s semifinals is expected to set the Bauxite Mining Town on fire.
Topping all and sundry to date and earning to right to contest the final four are Coomack, Retrieve Unknowns, Half Mile / One Mile and Eagles.
Coomacka’s Ateba Edmonson who is the tournament’s leading goal scorer to date with 7, will aim to maintain his efficiency up front in guiding his team all the way but they will have to first get past Retrieve Unknowns, a team which has certainly made their intentions known as contenders for the big prize and bragging rights. Retrieve Unknowns will be led by Shackee Charles and company.
The main attraction tomorrow night which will also see four (4) exhibition matches being played, brings together Half Mile / One Mile against the high flying Eagles which has at the helm of their goal hunt, the reliable Dean Charter who has chartered a near perfect course for his side to date. Charles Harvey will be at the helm of Half Mile / One Mile’s challenge.
Commenting on the flow of the tournament to date, coordinator Caeron Sealey said that it has progressed excellently to date and fans can look forward to a great evening of top class action at the semis.
“We are very pleased with the progress of the tournament generally to date. The teams and players have really adapted well to this version of the game and there have been some very exciting match-ups. I would also like to note that the fan support has been very pleasing and we expect that to improve even further for the semis tomorrow and the grand finale on Saturday.”
Lee Baptiste, Guinness Stout Brand Manager in an invited comment said that Banks DIH Limited, bottlers and distributors of Guinness is quite pleased with the way the tournament has progressed having been a big hit in the Capital City.
Baptiste said that they are aiming to take the tournament to other parts of Guyana so that players and fans will be able to experience the energy and excitement that the Guinness Greatest of the Streets football brings with it.
The exhibition games scheduled for tomorrow evening; Speightland Butterflies will match skills against Star Girls in the al female match-up.
East Masters tangles with West Masters; the Referees will hang up their whistles for a while and seek to showcase their on-field skills when they come up against Promoters while the dozens of USA based visitors who are home for the Easter holidays have formed themselves into the Brooklyn team and will aim to silence Linden when they face off in the main supporting game.
Kick off time tomorrow is 18:00hrs.
