Dear Editor,
I fully endorse your editorial comments on Satya Sai Baba (KN Apr 25) that his religious influence will continue through his millions of followers worldwide. His charitable foundations will continue to impact on millions of lives. It is one of the finest commentaries on the life of Sai Baba and I applaud the writer for this enlightened piece.
Baba’s life was remarkable positively impacting and transforming the lives of so many millions. He stood out as a rare phenomenon — a spiritual leader with mass following transcending linguistic, national, caste, racial, and religious boundaries. He was unique among religious icons – being a source of inspiration to millions of followers (of diverse ethnicity and religions) around the globe and tens of millions more in his native India transforming their lives.
He took care of the spiritual needs of devotees and improved their lives materially as well. Families have been comforted by his love and kindness. We are blessed to have had such a human being (although many saw him as a reincarnation of God) amongst us over the last 85 years.
Baba’s message was that we should try to help people whenever and wherever possible. His motto was “Love all, serve all, help all” regardless of background. Baba steered clear of divisive political and communal activities all his life and not surprisingly people of all ethnicities flocked to him.
As a writer noted, Baba’s phenomenal worldwide mass appeal lay in “his unswerving commitment to communal harmony, his encouragement of charitable activity and public-spiritedness, and his own example in building educational and health care institutions that focused on meeting basic needs on a large scale”.
He provided for the needs of over a million daily – even governments don’t perform such service for the poor.
Baba motivated people into giving and sharing. He inspired people to give to humanity and many of us do, especially Guyanese settled in America. He showed that if a small percentage of the wealthy gives a minute portion of their wealth to alleviate poverty, society will be so much better.
I visited Baba’s ashram in 1985 and again in 1990 when his acclaim was spreading worldwide. The area was being developed and it was a long arduous journey by rough road from Bangalore city. Today, it is a completely different area – more like that of a modern town with beautiful hospital, college and schools.
Baba’s life was not without controversies, especially his “miracles” which were, to his devotees, expressions of his divine powers. But there is no doubt about his saving lives through his charitable activities – providing people with potable water, education and medical care.
If the values he embodied have been imbibed by more people and by government, the world would have been a better place.
It is hoped that Baba’s good work will continue by his Trust, especially his “Educare” programme which is among the best in the world.
Through it children are brought up and given an excellent education not only on knowledge skills but on human values.
As a scholar pointed out, Baba “succeeded where the Indian government and, maybe even the British Government, had failed” in educational policy.
In sum, Sai Baba was a great servant of mankind, exemplifying the core Hindu value. He served people and according to Hindu philosophy, service to man is service to God. There are those who may question whether he was God. But none can question his kindness.
