Debutants Harmony snatch ‘Screw’ Richmond Memorial Football title
David named MVP, top goal-scorer

Second half substitute Shaquille Clarke found himself in the right place at the right time and he made no mistake, tapping home from close range to break the 1-1 deadlock and give debutants Harmony Secondary a hard fought 2-1 win over Christianburg/Wismar and the title in this year’s Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond Memorial Schools Competition which ended last evening, at the MSC ground in Linden.

Clarke’s effort came in the 82nd minute of play after a feeble attempt to clear the ball by Christianburg/Wismar goalkeeper Yannick Simmons off a cross from the right flank managed to elude a host of defenders, before landing in the path of an unmarked Clarke.
Earlier, Christianburg/Wismar dominated most of the first half and had it not been for competent goalkeeping from custodian Ryan Rose, they might have had at least three goals, especially with the nippy Kwesi Quentin wreaking havoc on the defence with some mesmerising forays down the left wing.
However, it was Harmony who took the lead when tournament Most Valuable Player Colwen David burst through the middle of the defence and delivered a thunderous header off a corner. That goal came in the 33rd minute of play and it remained that way at the break.
Shortly after the resumption, Christianburg/Wismar were rewarded with a penalty after a player from Harmony was whistled for a hand ball inside the penalty area by the referee and the ensuing spot kick was expertly placed in the right hand corner by Kwesi Quentin, beating the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Rose. His effort came in the 48th minute of play.
After then both teams attacked with fervour, but solid defending supported by good goalkeeping kept the score-line even.
However, the introduction of Clarke proved to be the game changer as he repeatedly sped down the wing and created headaches for the opposing defenders, before he eventually got the winner sending their fans into wild celebration.
Apart from copping the MVP award, David also took home Most Goals (5) and Best Mid-fielder prizes, while Clarke was voted the Best Forward, Joshawn Freeman- Best Defender and Rose- Best Goalkeeper.
Harmony received the Lien and Replica Trophies, while the two finalists were rewarded with new uniforms.
The third place playoff which was scheduled to be between defending champions Wisburg and Linden Foundation did not materialise after the latter failed to show up handing the former victory by walkover.
The tournament was organised by the overseas-based chapter of the Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond Foundation in collaboration with the Local Organising Committee.
The presentation of prizes was done by members of the overseas chapter including President Ernest Joseph, Richard Thompson and Joseph London.
