The prisoner from the New Amsterdam facility who was injured in a fight and had to be transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital has died from this wounds.
Sebastian Cleto, 24 ,of 42 Bent Street, Wortmanville, Georgetown, who was incarcerated for murder was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital on Thursday after he and fellow inmate, Andy Adams, 21, of Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice were assaulted by about three other prisoners after a misunderstand in the penitentiary.
It is understood that the two men, who are jointly charged for the same murder committed on July 20, 2007, were attacked and badly beaten by the other gang who used pieces of wood and other implements.
Both Cleto and Adams were both rushed to the New Amsterdam hospital where Adams was treated and sent away. Cleto who was unconscious due to an injury to the head, was later transferred to the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital in a critical condition where he subsequently died around 06:00 hrs on Monday.
Police are investigating the incidents and murder charges are likely to be laid soon. The accused inmates are currently isolated from the general population.
Cleto and Adams were incarcerated for murdering Nizamudeen Khan, a security guard attached to a Rosignol sawmill.
The men were employed at the sawmill and had resided in the compound. They had allegedly gone out to celebrate a colleague’s birthday and upon their return had a misunderstanding with Khan, the gate man, who refused to open the gate.
Khan subsequently opened the gate and when the men entered they allegedly dealt him several blows about the body with pieces of wood. Khan subsequently died a few days later at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
On the same day Cleto and Adams were injured a convicted prisoner and a prison officer were also injured in a separate incident at the New Amsterdam prison.
Chris Rampersaud, a convicted prisoner who is serving a two-year sentence was injured by his one time buddy in crime, Desmond Isaacs, who is on remand for robbery under arms for which he and Rampersaud are jointly charged.
It was reported that Isaacs accosted his one-time buddy and struck him on the head with a piece of iron. During the melee, prison officer Tony Lewis rushed to part the two men and was injured.
The two were taken to the New Amsterdam hospital where they were treated and sent away. The police are investigating and charges are likely soon.
A number of inmates have died and or hospitalised at various prisons in the country from injuries sustained during their incarceration.
