In separate incidents in Berbice, bandits broke into two buildings on Friday night. They first broke into the Berbice Pensioners’ Association building, at Vryman’s Erven in New Amsterdam.
According to a member of the association, Clement Johnson, the thieves, some time on Friday evening, broke through the concrete wall at the back of the building to gain access and to steal the toilet fixtures in the building.
The building, since its construction, has never been used by the association which was awaiting information from the Regional Administration of Region Six with regards to the spending of $5M that President Jagdeo donated towards the building of a concrete structure.
The Berbice Pensioners’ Association has said that the stalled works by the Region is hampering their activities and have caused them to hold their meetings at the New Amsterdam Lions Den. Thieves have made it their habit to break into the structure and steal whatever is in the building.
Johnson told Kaieteur News that since the publication of the article in this newspaper a few weeks ago about the dissatisfaction of the association over the building that was built by the Regional Administration and left half-finished, nothing has been done.
He added that the association is thinking about holding a picketing exercise shortly.
Then bandits broke into the Hampshire Sanatan Mandir at Hampshire Settlement on the Corentyne.
According to President of the mandir, Sase Narine, bandits gained access through the side windows on the building, after cutting the padlocks on the fence. He said that they carted off three clocks, an amplifier; speaker boxes, four microphones and a Public Address system.
The bandits also stole five gold chains which were placed on the statues in the mandir.
Narine stated that this is the fourth time that the mandir has been invaded by bandits.
He said that a detective attached to the Albion Police Station arrived on the scene on Saturday and took statements.
