Guyana Football Federation Under-15 Inter Association competition continued yesterday afternoon when Jermaine Fletcher netted a hat trick of goals to propel Georgetown to a well deserved 4-2 victory over Bartica at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground.
Fletcher breached the opposition’s goal in the 33rd, 56th and 79th minutes while his teammate, Alpha McPhoy started the goal party with a 29th minute success. Antonio DeSantos (10th) and Alex Hopkinson (65th) saved some face for the Barticians but their efforts were just not enough.
The Barticians started the game with purpose and in just 10 minutes Antonio DeSantos converted a free kick from just outside the box to send the visitors ahead.
Thereafter, both teams engaged in tough football that truly entertained the small but appreciable crowd. McPhoy’s success was a humdinger. He collected a pass from midfield unto the right wing and blazed away with the opposition’s defense in hot pursuit, attempting to thwart his effort.
McPhoy was just outside the box when one of the Bartician’s defense players attempted to block his progress. The Georgetown striker responded with a fierce kick that flew past the entire defensive line as well as the goalie’s clutches.
Fletcher was unstoppable as he dribbled and weaved his way past the Bartician’s defense and at one time it appeared as though only half of the field was being utilized for the game as the ball hardly left the Bartician’s half.
Fletcher widened his personal tally and his team’s margin shortly after the resumption but a determined effort saw Hopkinson narrowing the margin in the second half to compliment DeSantos’ early success.
Meanwhile, the tournament which got underway three weeks ago also saw Upper Demerara capturing the honours over West Demerara at the Christianburg Ground Linden.
The Upper Demerara lads capitalized on their home advantage to mete out a 2 nil beating on their opponents through strikes off the boots of Kevin Cadogan in the 56th and Devon Tudor ten minutes later. Eight teams started the competition but Essequibo withdrew just before the championships got underway. The remaining teams were divided into two groups with West Demerara, East Coast and Upper Demerara in group ‘A’ while Georgetown, Bartica, Berbice and East Bank in group ‘B.’
