Albion was seeking a second straight Berbice Cricket Board junior title but was stopped in their tracks by a fine all-round performance from the visitors, Rose Hall Town Farfan & Mendes.
Last week Albion had defeated Rose Hall Town Pepsi to lift the Spready’s Bakery Under-19 50-over title but the visitors played well to retain the Under-15 crown.
Batting first after winning the toss Albion was pegged back by tight and controlled bowling from the visitors as they struggled to 12 for 1 off 11 overs.
A 56 run partnership between Rohan Harripersaud (28) and Shauraz Ramcharran (36) steadied the innings for Albion. With the fall of their wickets and that of Gudakesh Motie, Albion never recovered and struggled to 114 off their allotted 50 overs.
Bowling for RHT Farfan & Mendes, Shawn Pereira took 3-25 from 9 overs. Daniel Lewis, off spinner Devin Baldeo and Parmanand Narine each took a wicket.
Needing to score 115 runs from 50 overs to retain the title, RHT Farfan & Mendes were given a solid but slow opening partnership of 25 in 14 overs by Nicholas Cameron and Brandon Prashad as Albion employed an all spin bowling attack.
Prashad went caught behind for 13 off leg spinner Avinash Wajib.
Cameron and Berbice Under-15 all-rounder Devin Baldeo batted solidly to add 66 for the 2nd wicket to take team to 91 for 2 by the 32nd over; Wajib dismissed Baldeo for 25 with Cameron falling caught at mid off for an attractive 40 (4×4) at 99 for 3.
Skipper Pereira and his national Under-15 counterpart Parmanand Narine then added 16 runs to take RHT Farfan & Mendes to victory as they ended on 115 for 3 in 40.2 overs. Narine was unbeaten on 14 (3×4) and Pereira on 5.
Leg spinner Wajib was the only wicket taker for the home team with 3 for 25 from 8 overs. Wicketkeeper Nicholas Cameron was named man-of-the-finals for his crucial 40 and 3 stumpings.
President of the Berbice Cricket Board Keith Foster at the presentation ceremony stated that the tournament as an enormous success while expressing great pleasure at the number of talented players available in the Ancient County at the junior level.
Second Vice President of the Board Pastor Mark Lyte expressed gratitude to Mr. Bobby Deonarine of Tenelec Inc. based in Maryland, USA for his continued sponsorship of Berbice cricket noting that Tenelec Inc. was playing a major role in their development.
RHT Farfan & Mendes received $50,000 and the winner’s trophy while Albion pocketed $25, 000; Cameron collected $5,000 and a trophy.
