R&D Engineering Services Inc. has made it clear that its intention is to continue building the President’s/Jefford Track and Field Classic into the most prestigious athletics championships when the company continued its sponsorship of the event.
R&D Engineering yesterday handed over a sponsorship cheque to the Coordinator of the event, Edison Jefford at its North Road office. The company was among the major sponsors when the event began last year and had promised to continue its sponsorship based on positive results.
“We were there last year in Linden and what we saw we had never seen here in athletics. It was a professional effort and an exciting event and based on those results we are continuing funding of this event,” the Chief Executive Officer of R&D Engineering, Reginald Roach, said yesterday.
Just as last year, the Second Edition of the President’s/Jefford Track and Field Classic will be in Linden at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground on May 22. “We hope that the Coordinators make this event an international one,” Roach concluded.
Asked to comment on the energy and enthusiasm surrounding the President’s/Jefford Track and Field Classic, which was undoubtedly the biggest athletics event in Guyana last year, Jefford said that it attracts the crème de le crème in local athletics.
“The best athletes and clubs in Guyana met on one field to decide who is the ultimate best at the club and at the individual levels; there is no other meet in Guyana that offers that opportunity.
It is one of a kind and that is just one way in which it is,” he said.
In addition, Jefford said that the meet rewards clubs from first to fourth places with winning club taking home $300,000; second place $200,000; third place $100,000 and fourth place $50,000. It also rewards the most outstanding athletes for individual performances.
He said that they have added two events this year that will attract lucrative cash prizes for the top three finishers. He revealed that one of them will be an International/Invitational Women’s 200m that will see Aliann Pompey compete for the first time in Guyana in the New Millennium since winning two Commonwealth medals.
Jefford believes that the meet this year will take athletics in Guyana to another level with lots of other features that will be formally disclosed when the event is officially launched at a date to be announced soon.
He thanked R&D for their growing contributions.
