Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry yesterday sentenced Camp Street inmate, Michael Robinson, to three years in jail and fined him $30,000 for having possession of 29 grams of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
Robinson who was unrepresented pleaded guilty. He then requested an opportunity to explain himself.
But before he was given the chance, Police Corporal, Venetta Pindar, the prosecutor, alleged that on April 1, at the Camp Street Penitentiary, the accused who is serving time for another offence was found with the illicit herbs in his possession.
She went on to explain that on the day of the incident, prison wardens observed Robinson in the compound of the said detention center acting in a suspicious manner. For that reason a search was carried out on his person and a black plastic bag stashed in his crotch was unearthed.
The defendant interrupted the prosecutor. “It was not in my crotch; is de officer tell me to walk with it”.
Pindar added that the defendant was subsequently taken up to higher authority at the prison. Tests were then carried out on the substance in the presence of the said inmate and the substance found to be marijuana.
He was told of the offence and charged.
Robinson said that he found the substance at a fence while he was there urinating but it was not his “drugs”.
“My worship I don’t go on de road…Is work I dos work in de compound. De day I went to de fence to urinate and I saw a black plastic bag sticking out and I jus pull it. As I was pulling de ting, I see 21 zip lock packets with marijuana fallout …same time an officer from Berbice prison come and saw me with it”.
Robinson is currently serving a further two years at Camp Street Prison for escaping from lawful custody.
And just before he received the sentence, he begged the court for mercy. “Have mercy on me. Please give me something (jail time) that can work into my time I am already spending cause I want to come out of jail by next year”.
He was escorted out of the courtroom thanking the Magistrate.
