Eighteen amateur boxers have been selected to commence intense training as the executive of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) prepare to attend several international tournaments.
Organiser of tournaments and coach, Terrence Poole disclosed that the boxers have been instructed to report to the National Park at 05:30hrs on Monday May 2 to commence training for possible selection to several impending overseas outings.
Mr. Poole explained that among the tournaments identified for participation are the London Olympics, scheduled for England next year. He also said that executives of GABA are eying the Pan American Qualifier in June and the Junior World Championships scheduled for July.
Mr. Poole further explained that all aspiring participants at the Pan American games must first participate in one of the qualifying tournaments within their respective zones.
He further said that one such tournament is currently being held in Ecuador but GABA executives are awaiting word from officials of the International Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) pertaining to the zone in which local boxers will be competing.
The GABA coach is optimistic that his organisation would receive the requisite funding to offset the various international games. “It is very important that the GABA receive the financial support so that our amateur pugilists get the opportunity to procure international accolades for this country,” said Mr. Poole.
Meanwhile, those selected for the national team are Troy Billey, Dexter Wray, Stephon Gouveia, Nankumar Singh, Eon Bancroft, Burt Braithwaite, Markember Pierre, Ron Smith, Kelsie George, Imran Khan, Samuel Primo, Keeve Allicock, Benjamin Henry, Marvin Ageday, Laured Stewart, Dennis Thomas, Marlon Darrell and Richard Williamson.
