Football buffs turned out in their numbers and were thoroughly entertained when a team of footballers comprising New York players opposed a GT All Stars team at the Camptown Ground, Campbellville moments after another team comprising present day players from Sunburst Camptown opposed their counterparts of the past when the organizing committee of the Camptown FC staged a fund raising football classic on Wednesday evening last.
In the first match of the evening Jamal Codrington, representing the current Camptown team stitched in a 46th minute goal and received support from Sherwin Cadogan in the 81st minute to cart off the honours 2-0 against the ‘Players of the Past’ team while the second match of the evening that pitted the skills of a New York team against a GT All Stars side ended on penalty kicks, 3-1 in favour of the latter team.
The GT All Stars team might have visualized an easy victory but this was not to be as the past footballers turned in a spirited performance that made the former team fight for the entire first half without any success.
The duration of the match was shortened to 70 minutes to facilitate the overseas players, all past their prime. However, they defied age and battled furiously in the first half, making the younger players work for any measure of success. Their efforts ensured the two teams went in at half time on a nil all stalemate.
Fielding an impressive lineup that included midfielders Devon Forde and Sherwin Cadogan with Orlando Gilgeous and Leon Muir shoring up the defense, the present day players eventually made the breakthrough in the second stanza after Codrington performed a superb dribbling act that left the opposition strikers mesmerized and the defense lineup totally beaten.
Despite being one down, the former players refused to surrender and their good defensive tactics saw many opportunities created by the opposition going to waste. It took the dexterity of Sherwin Cadogan to push the advantage wider. He collected the ball and raced to the opposition’s goal only to be brought down by what the referee subsequently ruled to be an overly harsh tackle.
The infringement occurred within the box earned him a penalty which he duly converted. The rest of the game was characterized by near misses and in some cases tactical blunders that kept the score at 2-0 up to the final whistle.
The game between the New York Celebrity side and the GT All Stars was a humdinger with both teams battling furiously to distinguish itself. The local squad learnt quickly enough that the overseas based team meant business. Former striker of Camptown, Junior Van Rossum was among the standouts. He created the perfect play, dribbling the ball past Phillip Rowley and Howard Lowe but after doing all the hard work, spoiled the play with a loose shot that slid alongside the goalpost.
The local players were also guilty of loose play as in the case of Devon Millington and Nigel Codrington whose combined blunders ensured that the score remained 0-0 at the end of regulation time. Both misdirected their strikes to send them along the side of the target.
When the penalty kicks were taken, the overseas based team sent three chances over the bar while scoring one. On the contrary, the local squad formalized the victory with pin point accuracy.
