Dear Editor,
Is it coincidental that another Government Minister in this same Century under the same regime has been fingered and accused by an ordinary citizen, of being involved in a criminal act?
First there was George Bacchus against former Home Affairs Minister Ronald Gajraj, and then there was the informant in the Roger Khan saga against Health Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy and the “spy equipment”, and now there is Balwant Persaud against Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee.
What or which minister is next?
But what is even more interesting is the fact that none of these ministers opted to, or were asked to resign with such grave accusations being hurled against them, even with what many might dub as “the evidence to back up the claims”.
In any democratic country, these ministers would have had to resign or would have been removed from their posts pending investigations; but not in Guyana, no sir, things are different here where the Government is judge and jury.
Once a minister or any Government official publicly proclaims innocence after being accused, everything is fine and dandy, and the accuser is dubbed either “insane”, “shady” or even a “criminal”.
Yes, that’s how things are done in this Third World country in this Twenty First Century.
Additionally, in all these cases, the ministers have either managed to skillfully deny their involvement, or justify them to make it seem as though what was done, was for a good cause; so these accusers are clearly insane persons hurling accusations at the Nation’s Saints disguised as Government Ministers.
And what happens when opposition parties call for international enquiries? Certain Government advisors make statements about insufficient evidence for enquiries as they are forever waiting on evidence from overseas, or they simply pretend that the opposition officials too are insane for even attempting to call for such.
Mr. Editor, it is either our ministers are Saints while ordinary citizens are crazy, or we are living in an insane society where anything goes; but then again, many have recently questioned the sanity of our Head of State President Bharrat Jagdeo, given his recent and constant public ramblings. So there, I rest my case.
