It started out as the customary early morning exercise but quickly turned into a nightmare for President of the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA), Charles Da Silva, who was chopped and robbed on the Liliendaal seawall by two men, one of whom was armed with a cutlass, around 06:00 hours yesterday.
The attack occurred in proximity to the Texaco gas station on the East Coast of Demerara. The assailants were reportedly transported by car.
Da Silva, who was relieved of his gold chain, is presently a patient in the Intensive Care Unit of a private hospital.
According to reports from close friends, Da Silva would normally exercise by running each morning on the seawall.
Yesterday he decided to sit and take a break when he noticed someone approaching him.
However, he ignored the individual, who turned out to be one of the robbers.
It was further disclosed that the man snatched Da Silva’s chain and attempted to escape.
When the GGDMA executive managed to grab him, a vehicle with two persons drove up and one of the occupants emerged and dealt him a chop to the head with a cutlass.
The man who snatched his chain then entered the car with the others and they made good their escape.
The matter was reported to the police but so far no one has been arrested.
