14 teams participate; hundreds flock #63 Beach
The youthful and energetic duo of Ian Bagot and Luen David, competing under the name ‘Upsetters’, created several upsets on Easter Monday at the # 63 Beach as they played unbeaten to cart off the first place trophies when the Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) held its first Knock-Out Beach Classic 2 v 2 tournament.
The diminutive Bagot and his lanky partner David was the perfect match for their opponents as they mixed powerful spikes and rock solid defence to wear down some of their more experienced and recognized challengers.
The duo did not let up in any of their games which were played in extremely humid conditions and witnessed by hundreds of local and foreign spectators (many first time witnesses of beach volleyball-live) who took time to capture the action on their cell phones and video cameras.
Upsetters triumphed over Mahesh and Surendra Motiepersaud (Jaguars) in a hard fought final, winning two sets to one.
Earlier they {Upsetters} upstaged pre-tournament favorites Javed Jhingree and Quacy Matheson (National U-19 players / Outlaws) in the semi-finals with a stunning display of defence and attack, the kind only witnessed in Pro-Beach Volleyball on the International Circuit.
Outlaws got the better of Eric and Allan (Falcons) to clinch the third place.
At the conclusion of the tournament which attracted fourteen (14) teams and was played on a knock-out basis (two best of three games), trophies, medals and prizes were presented to the first, second and third place finishers and a medal was presented to Renuka Seepersaud for being the lone female player and Levi Nedd for being the oldest player.
