After a lull of almost a decade, the National Awards of Guyana are slated to be restarted this year, reliable sources have told Kaieteur News. The awards are expected to be announced on May 25 by President Bharrat Jagdeo, who is Chancellor of the Orders of Guyana.
The awards have traditionally been handed out by the current PPP/C government on October 5.
The first appointments to the Orders of Guyana were made in 1970. It is unclear if awards would be made in all categories.
The highest national award is the Order of Excellence of Guyana, which is limited to six living citizens of Guyana.
The Order of Roraima of Guyana, the second highest national award, is limited to thirty-five living citizens of Guyana.
Other awards include the Cacique’s Crown of Honour, the Golden Arrowhead of Achievement, and the Medal of Service.
Special awards within the Order of Service for courage and bravery are The Cacique’s Crown of Valour, the Golden Arrow of Courage and the President’s Commendation for Brave Conduct.
Awards within the Order of Service for Military Service and for service in the Police, Prisons and Fire Services are the Military Service Star, the Military Service Medal, the Efficiency Medal, and the Disciplined Services Star for Distinguished Service, The Disciplined Services Medal for Meritorious Service, and the Disciplined Services Medal for Long Service and Good Conduct.
The last national awards ceremony was held in 2002.
After then, several other persons received national awards individually, including posthumously, President Cheddi Jagan, for whom a special award, namely the Order of Liberation, was declared.
