Yesterday as the preliminary inquiry (PI) into the murder of 16-year-old Queen’s College student, Neesa Lalita Gopaul, was called again at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, none of the lawyers representing her alleged killers were present.
Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry is hearing the case.
Because of the absence of the lawyers the PI was re-fixed for continuation on May 9, at 13:20 hours.
State appointed prosecutor, Pretima Kissoon, had informed the court that all the witnesses who were expected to take to the witness stand yesterday were present.
Neesa’s mother, Bibi Gopaul, and her gym instructor-lover, Jarvis ‘Barry’ Small, are charged for allegedly killing her.
Attorney at-law Vic Puran and his daughter, Mishka Puran, are representing Bibi while senior counsel Bernard De Santos and Pamela De Santos, are representing Small.
Already examined by the prosecution were police Lance Corporal, Jermain Laundry, Lance Corporal Anoudh Bissoon, Jennifer Sumrah, Keisha Douglas, policeman Joel David, and Assistant Superintendent Terrance Paul and Bharrat Samaroo.
During one of the hearings certain exhibits were tendered in open court. The lawyers made no objection.
It was quite a scene when Bibi who was seated in the prisoners’ dock started to sob while the exhibits were shown to the court.
The police are alleging that some time during September and October 2010, Small and Bibi Gopaul
murdered Neesa Gopaul.
The teen went missing on September 23, 2010, and a report was made at the Leonora Police Station by her mother two days later, on September 25.
Her remains with the head bashed in beyond recognition were found at the Emerald Towers Resort, on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway on October 2.
The disfigured corpse was found stuffed in a large suitcase that was dumped into the Madewini Creek. Certain articles found in the suitcase, led to the arrest of the two suspects.
