The Guyana Post Office Corporation is gearing to close three post offices on the Essequibo Coast in the foreseeable future. And this decision sparked a protest yesterday.
Area manager of the local Post Offices in Region Two, Anthony Farley, told residents of Queenstown at an engagement on Wednesday, that the closure of the entities was on the cards for a long time. The post offices listed for closure are the Queenstown Post Office, Aurora Post Office and Danielstown Post Office, all in Region Two.
Farley is citing security concerns and the inability of the post offices to generate sufficient revenue.
He further explained to the residents, who after learning that the Queenstown Post Office Corporation was going to close its service to the community and beyond, had queued up in the Queenstown Post Office building. Farley proceeded to inform residents that the old building had been operating at a loss for a number of years.
The area manager also alerted mostly pensioners who had turned up to contest the decision by the senior GPOC officers to have the Queenstown post office merge with the Anna Regina post Office.
The pensioners argued that the GPOC is an entity that is designed to provide a service at an affordable cost.
“The GPOC is not budgeted for in the government allocations.”
Farley informed residents, too, that over the years Queenstown Post Office “did not generate sufficient revenues to maintain the yard, the building, a guard and our staff.”
One vocal resident of Queenstown, Benjamin, remarked that “this post office (Queenstown) is part of the Government; it is here for a number of years and is also one situated in the largest communities on the Coast. What would become of the staff? If you remove the post office to Anna Regina, it means our staff will suffer. Let’s not think for our selves, but for the elderly.”
Another resident, Komal, said that the GPOC has no sympathy for old people. Komal said that the Queenstown post office service an average of six thousand residents, within Aberdeen and Capoey.
Mr. Marks an 81-year-old said that the Queenstown Post Office had previously existed at four other venues prior to its present location.
The octogenarian is calling for the post office to remain in Queenstown. “Must I walk to Anna Regina? Will I always find that money to travel?”
With the foreseeable closure of the Queenstown Post Office residents from Queenstown to Capoey would have to travel all the way to Anna Regina to do all of their transactions which include paying all their utility bills and uplifting their pensions.
Farley said that the closure of the three post offices would not affect the employment of any staff.
