These days, returning to Guyana for a well earned holiday could turn out to be quite an unsettling experience, as many overseas-based Guyanese are finding out.
The nightmare stems from the brazen attacks by bandits who relieve the unsuspecting visitors of their cash and other valuables – even their travel documents.
It is as if the bandits have a profile on all passengers arriving in Guyana as well as the addresses they are visiting, and the police appear clueless to stem these unwelcomed activities.
In the latest attack, a Guyanese couple visiting from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA, was attacked and robbed of their valued possessions by six men, all carrying guns, less than an hour after arriving in the country.
The attack put a dent on the couple’s Easter celebrations as even their local relatives were robbed during the attack which occurred at Laing Avenue early last Friday morning.
Police reports stated that Veronica Pyle, 53, of 1653 Panland Drive, Boyton Beach, Florida, was robbed of her Guyanese and American passports; US$1500; a gold wristwatch; a quantity of other jewellery and a cellular phone, while 59-year-old Morty Pyle, an Engineer, also of Florida, had his gold band, chain and ring taken away.
The bandits even showed a liking for foreign liquor, snatching four bottles of whisky in the process.
Also victims of the robbery were Morris Pyle, 54, a contractor, of 251 Callender Street, Albouystown, who was relieved of a gold band, and Ryan Pyle, an employee of the University of Guyana and of 79 Laing Avenue.
According to the police, Veronica and Morty Pyle arrived in Guyana last Friday and were picked up by Morris Pyle at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport at around 02:00hrs.
An hour later they went to visit Ryan Pyle, and as they were in the car talking to him and other family members, the suspects approached on foot, held the victims at gunpoint and demanded the articles mentioned. The terrified victims complied and handed over all of their valuables to the suspects who made good their escape.
No shots were fired and no one was injured.
The matter was reported to the police who are investigating.
A senior police official had told another section of the media that the attacks on overseas visitors was not too alarming, while another had told this newspaper that there are systems in place to stem these attacks. These systems include regular patrols along the route from the airport to the city. However, for some strange reason, the criminals always appear to be a step ahead of the police.
