A devastating spell from Guyana Under-15 left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie led Albion to victory over Tucber Park in their replayed Berbice Cricket Board Tenelec Inc 50-over Under-15 Semifinal last Saturday at the Edinburgh ground on the East Bank of Berbice.
After the teams had played to a sensational tie in the original Semifinal, the match was re-fixed and Albion emerged victorious by 29 runs as the pint-size Motie became the first bowler in the history of organized cricket in Guyana at any level to claim a helmet-trick (four wickets off four consecutive balls) and a hat-trick (three wickets in three balls) in the same innings.
The 15-year-old back-of-the hand spinner, who has been representing Guyana at the under-15 level since he was a 12-year-old in 2007, mesmerized the batsmen with his both-way turn to finish with 7-14 from 5.4 overs.
In a match reduced to 40 overs due to a late start caused by heavy rain the previous day, Albion surprisingly elected to bat first on a pitch with moisture and must have quickly regretted that decision as they slumped to 14-3 with national Under-15 all rounder Romario De Jonge picking up two wickets and Berbice Under-15 pacer Nial Smith the other.
However, once the two pacers were pulled out of the attack after bowling five overs each in keeping with the competition’s regulations for pacers, the pressure on Albion was eased and Motie (19) and David Lachaiya (14) added 46 before they both fell to off-spinner Aryton Adams to leave Albion on 60-5.
With right-arm leg-spinner Daniel Thuesday picked up two wickets, Adams another and De Jonge two more in his second spell, Albion struggled to 87 all out in 28.4 overs. De Jonge took 4-13 from 6.4 overs, Adams 3-15 from 6 overs and Thuesday 2-29 from 7 0vers for Tucber Park who lost Aryton Adams for four with just five runs on the board when they began their reply.
De Jonge and Gary Millington added 18 before Millington was run out, while three runs later the in form Hakeem Hinds was also run out leaving Tucber in trouble at 26-3. Nial Smith joined De Jonge who took 10 runs off Motie’s first over but with the partnership worth 23 and the score 49 Motie began his demolition job. In four consecutive balls he clean bowled Smith (8), trapped De Jonge (23) and Jerome Henry (0) LBW before bowling Martin Singh (0) to reduce Tucber Park to 50-7 and claiming a Helmet-trick.
Keirre Henry and Kevin Henry grafted eight runs between them for the 8th wicket before Motie struck again; trapping Kevin Henry (2), Gavin Moriah Jnr (0) and Daniel Thuesday (0) LBW off consecutive balls to follow up his helmet-trick with a hat-tick as Tucber Park crashed to 58 in 16.4 overs.
The New Amsterdam team lost their last 7 wicket for just nine runs as Motie wrote his name into the history books of Guyana’s cricket. Albion will clash with fellow Corentyne team Rose Hall Town Farfan & Mendes at the Area ‘H’ ground in Rose Hall Town at Albion from 09:30hrs tomorrow.
