Andrew Taylor, who was accused of leading police ranks on a high speed chase around the city after stealing a motor car belonging to a policeman, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday to answer to the charge of simple larceny. Taylor entered a guilty plea and was sentenced to four years imprisonment.
According to police prosecutor Corporal Venetta Pindar, on April 22, last, at Berbice Bus Park, Hyrone Johnson parked his silver Toyota 212 motor car, HD 2266, valued $2.7 million, and was in conversation with several of his friends.
It was minutes later he observed Taylor enter his vehicle and drive away. Johnson attempted to stop the car with the help of others, but the accused managed to make good his escape. The matter was reported, and acting on certain information received ranks proceeded to Bagotstown, Public Road ,East Bank Demerara, it was not long after that they came upon the accused who was in possession of their colleague’s automobile.
They gave chase, but this time the accused was not so lucky as he was forced to head into the busy downtown area.
Determined to recover the car, the police opened fire, deflating the left side rear wheel, almost disabling the vehicle.
Eventually the ranks managed to block the car behind the Guyana Fire Service Headquarters, Stabroek, Georgetown, and apprehended the accused.
Taylor who was unrepresented pleaded guilty. He begged for a chance to explain himself. In a deep American accent, Taylor stated that most of his close relations reside overseas.
He went on to explain that it was half an hour after driving away with the vehicle he was arrested by police ranks. “My worship I saw the car in Albouystown with the keys in its ignition in a place where cars don’t normally be parked… with its keys in the ignition… so I decided to take it to sell for spare parts, My worship I am a drug addict, so what you expect me to do.”
He gave his address as East La Penitence, Georgetown.
Taylor also informed the court that he was recently charged for damaging another person’s motor vehicle. He then asked to be given a chance to apologize to the plaintiff. When permitted, Taylor with sadness in his voice asked the plaintiff to forgive him for stealing his vehicle.
Following his disclosure, Magistrate Beharry imposed a prison term of four years.
