Relatives of an East Coast Demerara goldsmith who several weeks ago was lured to Ann’s Grove to buy gold but was robbed instead, are now anxious about his wellbeing.
On March 8, last, Mahendra Persaud was beaten and relieved of $99,000, a cellular phone, personal jewellery and a scale.
Two men were subsequently arrested and charged for the robbery.
On Sunday, last, Persaud disappeared and has not contacted his relatives since.
This newspaper was told that Persuad was last seen on Sunday at the Enterprise Community Centre Ground. Family members said they have contacted his friends and every other close relative but no one has seen or heard from him.
This newspaper was also told that Persaud was schedule to appear in court today to give evidence against the two men who allegedly robbed him.
Meanwhile initial reports are that on the day of the robbery Persaud had made arrangements with one Vicky of Ann’s Grove to purchase some raw gold.
On arrival there, the man took him to the Ann’s Grove Foreshore where he told him he was awaiting a man who had the gold for sale.
While sitting on the seawall Persaud was confronted by another man Carlton Jones who allegedly dealt him a blow to his head and took away the articles mentioned. Jones then rode away on a bicycle to his home at Unity, Mahaica.
According to a police press release, subsequent investigations into the report led to Jones’ arrest by the police.
The other man who had allegedly lured the goldsmith to the area was subsequently arrested by public-spirited persons and handed over to the investigating ranks.
A missing person report has since been made to the police and relatives are asking if anyone has information about Persaud’s whereabouts to contact them on telephone number 229-6629 or 639-9434.
