His recent experience with persons whom he thought were policemen has caused him to come out and warn others. On Sunday last, West Demerara businessman Rajesh Singh said he was driving along the East Bank of Demerara Public Road, at Peter’s Hall, en route to his home, when he was stopped by persons he believed to be law enforcement officials.
According to Singh, it was around 00:30 when he noticed a white Toyota AT192 parked at the side of the road with a flashing blue light, similar to those used by police. Singh said a male individual in civilian clothing then flagged down his vehicle. The businessman recalled that as soon as his vehicle stopped, one of the men entered the front passenger seat of his vehicle while another held him at gunpoint.
The assailants then relieved him of $140,000 in cash and a gold chain valued in excess of $100,000. Immediately after, Singh said, the men went back to the parked car and sped away, leaving him stunned. The man said he merely re-started his vehicle and headed home.
However, this recent incident has now left him, and others whom he has since informed about his encounter, even more fearful of stopping at roadblocks at night. The businessman emphasised that given the manner in which he was stopped, he was convinced that it was police ranks. Singh said while it is clear that the persons who robbed him were not police, it is difficult in such circumstances to differentiate between the police and the thieves.
“This kind of stuff is real scary. Now I keep telling myself if I am stopped by police late in the night I will be tempted to just drive without stopping to the nearest police station.”
Singh said he hopes that his experience will help to alert the unsuspecting, now that he has been given an opportunity to inform the public.
