Several late changes in the amateur segment of the 14th edition of the ProAm boxing cards failed to cast a damper on the quality of the bouts and the performances of the boxers have further strengthened the belief that the sport is poised to procure major international accolades once given the requisite support.
The fights were staged last Monday night and the venue for the card was shifted to Linden to coincide with the yearly Town day activities.
In a bout worthy of applause, Dexter Wray, representing the Ricola Warriors Boxing gym, demonstrated all the attributes of a seasoned pugilist to cart off the honours in his flyweight encounter with Kelwin Josiah of Essequibo Boxing gym. Both boxers demonstrated a good aptitude of the sport and it was refreshing to see Josiah perfecting the jab as a precursor to his combinations.
He enjoyed a height advantage over Wray but what the former boxer lacked in height, he made up for in guts and determination. Wray, a protégé of the late Donald Allison, has gelled nicely into an all round boxer and his application and immense skill was indeed a joy to behold.
Josiah must also be complimented for his pluck and dexterity, two valuable traits in the amateur arena. That he lost out to Wray is by no means something to be ashamed of especially since both boxers turned in a top performance. It was indeed a pity that one had to lose. In the end it was Wray that received the 2-1 nod.
Junior/welterweight, Bert Braithwaite battled Akeem Alexander and stamped his authority with several ramrod shots from the very first round.
Alexander did offer some retaliation but was overwhelmed by the skill and determination demonstrated by Braithwaite to earn him a 3-0 decision. Ron Smith and Dennis Thomas engaged in a three rounds exhibition match but the uninitiated would have believed that they were battling for nationalistic honours.
The two went after each other with some heavy artillery and at one stage it appeared as though Thomas would have made history by knocking out Smith in the first frame. He delivered his punches with mean intentions and had Smith’s head rocking backwards after every such attack.
Just when it appeared as though Smith was ready to call it a day he dug deep and came up with the goods. A spirited attack drove Thomas backwards and continued right up to the bell. There was no decision but each boxer exited the ring with the belief that he would have won had there been a decision.
Lindener, Joel Hackette was also in winner’s row with a well earned 2-1 decision over Kelvin Moore from Essequibo Boxing Gym. As is customary the boxers all received attractive food hampers from furniture giants Courts. In the absence of a representative, Nurse attached to the Guyana Boxing Board of Control, Patricia Chase Green, distributed the prizes.
