Prince Charming owned by the P and P Syndicate and running out of the Colin Elcock Stable showed that its recent victories in the horseracing circle was no fluke and that it is the horse to beat when it scored another thumping victory to take the feature event when the Port Mourant Turf Club held it annual Easter Sunday Horserace meet at the club’s track.
In front of a pack holiday crowd in excellent sunshine the large turn was treated to a good day of racing where upsets was the order of the day.
With $500,000 compliments of Banks DIH and the Rommel Jagroop Construction trophy available for the winner in the feature C and lower event some nine horses took to the staring gates. From the start of the event the atmosphere was intense and when the animals were sent on their way it was Miss Orientate, Marathon Man, The Message and Little Panie that carried the running into the first turn and onto the back stretch.
As the duel continued along the open straight, none of the horses wanted to give any quarters. Prince Charming once again being ridden by Jamaican Andron Findley was picking its stride and positioning in the chasing bunch. The talented Findley decided to run a different race this time with the distance being 1700m.
Way down into the back stretch Prince Charming started to make its move as the animal raced to the front setting a merry gallop as it went into the far turn, by then the field was wide open with Marathon Man of The Jumbo Jet stable with Colin Ross onboard chasing for all its worth, pressing Prince Charming as the animals headed into the home stretch. As Prince Charming powered ahead Marathon Man fought back even as Findley kept accelerating on Prince Charming.
However there was no stopping the leader as it continued to gather speed to be crowned champion by two lengths. The win showed that the animal is not only good at the sprints but the distance events as well. Marathon Man came in second, while Pinch de Cash had to be content with a token for third and Miss Orientate fourth. Top horse The Message faltered badly to end fifth.
Better than Gold of The Jagdeo Stable showed that it is better than the rest in the Three year old category when it steamed away from the rest of the field down the homestretch to take the coveted $300,000 and the Norman Singh memorial trophy. After some initial challenges from its competitors the animal with Rupert Ramnauth on its back literally changed gear and ran away from the rest of the field to win by a wide margin. Work Force worked its way up to second as Irish Girl faltered to third position ahead of a joy less Sabrina’s Joy.
The D class event saw Marathon Man of the Jumbo Jet stable with Mark Vassy in the stirrups gathering speed to sprint away from the rest of the field and take the coveted $300,000 top money and trophy. Zelik came through for second ahead of the much vaunted Face The Music and Night Crescendo over 1200M which was the distance for all the other events.
It was another win for the Jumbo Jet stable in the F class event as Home Bush Baby ambushed it competitors with a come from behind win. Smartly ridden by Ross the animal took over down the homestretch from stablemate Appealing Harvest to win the $240,000 first prize and trophy ahead of King Maker. Appealing Harvest came in third with Harry’s Dream ending at fourth.
The Jumbo Jet sable collected a third win for the day with Got to Go with Ross in the saddle going all the way to first place after a thigh duel with stable mate Bob’s Fortune which ended second as they held off the field for the $160,000 winners money and the Arch Way Snackette trophy. Harry’s Dream and Pegasus Rising could not rise to the challenge and ended third and fourth.
There was no fairy tale story as in the ‘I’ class Digicel sponsored event, which was won by Dream Girl ridden by Ross ahead of The Gump, Royal Time and Savion. The win was worth $140,000.
The I3 race, which was also sponsored by Digicel, was won by Princess Renuka from Nobody Knows, Speed Vision and Natural Mystic.
In the individual presentation ceremony, connections of The Jumbo Jet stable took away all the prizes. Apart from being the top stable, Jockey Ross copped the champion jockey crown and Trainer Raj Ramroop the top trainer award.
Over 65 Horses entered the starting gates. Prizes money totaling close to $4M were distributed.
