Last year she was a part of the audience and watched on as her younger sister, Annece Hicks, was crowned the Miss Regatta Queen 2010. This year 19-year-old Ava Hicks, a teacher in training at the Cyril Potter College of Education, was crowned Miss Bartica Regatta Queen 2011 by her sister.
The first runner-up position went to Delegate Number 4, Mariah Rhius; the second runner-up was Delegate Number 6, Nikita La Rose and the third runner-up place went to Delegate Number 2, Ashley Ghanie.
Despite starting late as a result of some technical difficulties, the show got off to an excellent start at the Bartica Community Centre Ground, with Master of Ceremony, radio personality Merrano Issacs.
It was officially opened with the singing of the National Anthem by Carmel Williams, a teacher of the Bartica Secondary School. This was then quickly followed by an opening dance by a group of young ladies who then made way for the delegates as they danced to the popular Rihanna’s ‘Only Girl in the world’.
The song was rendered by songster Annece Hicks, who was also the reigning Miss Bartica Regatta queen.
Following the dance the beauties then introduced themselves to the large gathering much to the delight of those attending. The delegates were each introduced back on stage to do their talent piece as the unenviable task of judging went to Ms. Sharon Persaud, 1986 Regatta Queen; 1995 queen and stay at home mother, Dacia Rampersaud; local designer Sonia Noel and Scotia Bank Departmental Manager Carlos Prowell.
From the response of the large gathering the talent segment was well delivered and well received. Some of the delegates delivered popular renditions while others showed off their dancing skills.
The delegates were quickly introduced and appeared in their swimsuits. Each time a delegate was introduced the crowd cheered loudly. As the night wore on the most elegant part of the pageant got underway as each delegate graced the stage which was decked out under the theme ‘royalty’.
It was a magical moment as each delegate stepped onto the stage in gowns that showcased their individual style and taste.
Then came the final question after the judges had taken time out to tally their scores to determine who would go through to the final round.
The eventual queen seemed to have won over the crowd of more than 2000 with her response to her final question.
It was about positive role models and she stole the hearts of the crowd with her response. Ava said that her mother is and has always been an inspiration to her and her siblings, She said that she could not have found a better role model.
Meanwhile the other prizes of Best Gown went to Andrea De Freitas; Best Essay and Miss Photogenic went to Ava Hicks; Best Talent to Donna Boyal; Miss Congeniality to Mariah Rhius; and Miss Body Beautiful was Nikita La Rose.
