Police were yesterday still questioning a suspect in connection with Saturday afternoon’s $2M robbery during which police Sergeant Ransford Liverpool was shot.
The suspect, who is reportedly from the East Coast of Demerara, was taken into custody after persons alleged that he owns one of the two bicycles that the gunmen left at the scene of the shooting.
A police official said that he is to be placed on an identification parade. They are hoping that Liverpool recovers enough to assist in identifying the suspect.
Liverpool, 30, was shot in the face and abdomen on Saturday when he went to the assistance of Jennifer Mohamed, a cambio dealer’s wife, who was being robbed.
Meanwhile, Liverpool is presently a patient in the High Dependency Unit of the Georgetown Hospital.
His condition is still listed as critical and doctors are closely monitoring him. His wife was present at the hospital yesterday but declined to divulge any information to the media about her husband’s condition.
According to reports, the drama began when Jennifer Mohamed, who is the wife of a cambio dealer, parked her car near Avenue of the Republic.
Police said that she exited the vehicle and was heading to Regent Street when four men on bicycles attempted to attack her.
The men, who came up on bicycles, demanded a bag that she had in her possession containing over $2 million and some documents and which she handed over to them.
Liverpool who was passing on his motorcycle at the time saw what was taking place and responded, resulting in an exchange of gunfire during which he was shot and injured.
Although badly wounded, Liverpool returned fire, but by then the men who had already secured the cash had begun retreating.
He then collapsed and was subsequently rushed to the hospital.
Kaieteur News understands that Liverpool was shot in the right side of the face and in the right side of his abdomen. The second bullet exited through his left buttock
The shootout occurred around 16:40 hrs at the corner of Avenue of the Republic and North Road.
Sources at GPHC, had told this publication that Liverpool, was conscious when he arrived at the hospital but expressed concern that he might have suffered some internal injury.
Police reportedly recovered 16 shells from a 9mm handgun at the scene. It is believed that the shells came from Liverpool’s 9mm pistol, since the magazine was empty.
Police suspect that the gunmen came from an area not far from the scene of the attack.
