Students are being urged by Education Minister Shaik Baksh, to pursue careers in the field of Science and Technology as the areas that will accelerate national growth.
Baksh, who was at the time addressing scores of students from the St. Ignatius Secondary School at the National Centre for Educational Resource Development (NCERD), stressed that movement in this direction is important for Guyana to be a competitive nation in the 21st century.
He also called on Fourth and Fifth Form students who were on a one-week tour of the city to take their studies seriously as they prepare to sit the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations.
The students who were accompanied by their school’s Board Chairman, Alfred Ramsarran, and Headteacher, Evette Archer, visited several Government ministries and business entities to learn of the various career choice opportunities.
Baksh also advised the students to start thinking about the career path they wish to pursue and focus their studies in the chosen direction. He stressed, too, that the Secondary School Competency Certificate (SCCP) programme has been introduced at the St. Ignatius Secondary School with the hope of ensuring that every child enrolled there completes school and can further his/her education.
He said that the government is placing significant attention on raising the standard of education delivery in the hinterland regions and noted that the aim is to make the standard of delivery there equal to schools on the coastland.
Baksh related that under the Teacher Education Reform Programme, every teacher in the hinterland who graduates from the Cyril Potter College of Education will have to serve their region.
The objective, he said is to ensure quality education delivery standards are met and is also in keeping with the broader vision to develop the human resources to aid the development of the region.
He also contended that students from any school can do well once their teachers are committed, their parents are supportive and they apply themselves to their studies.
On that note, Baksh urged the students to aim to better the 73 per cent pass rate the school achieved in 2010. He stressed too the importance of students being self-motivated and noted that student councils will be introduced in the school system.
He explained that this development is not intended to diminish the status of teachers but to get students to be more supportive and involved in some aspects of the decision making process. A training programme will be held to orient teachers of the role, function and other pertinent information on how the council works.
