– while foiling attack on cambio dealer’s wife
Police sergeant Ransford Liverpool was battling for his life in the Georgetown Public Hospital yesterday, after four gunmen on bicycles shot him in the face and abdomen even as he was foiling a brazen daylight attack on a cambio dealer’s wife.
The shootout occurred around 16:40 hrs at the corner of Avenue of the Republic and North Road.
The 30-year-old sergeant, who is seconded to the Office of the President, managed to return fire, forcing the bandits to flee empty-handed but leaving two bicycles behind.
Kaieteur News understands that Liverpool was shot in the right side of the face and in the right side of his abdomen. The second bullet exited through his left buttock.
He was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation in a stable condition, and was being prepared for surgery late last night.
A source told Kaieteur News that the wounded man was conscious, but expressed concern that he had suffered some internal injury.
When Kaieteur News arrived at the scene of the shooting, police ranks were still examining the bicycles, while securing their shot colleague’s motorcycle.
Police reportedly recovered 16 shells from a 9mm handgun from the scene. It is believed that the shells came from Liverpool’s 9mm pistol, since the magazine was empty.
According to reports, the drama began when Jennifer Mohamed, who is the wife of a cambio dealer, parked her car near Avenue of the Republic.
Police said that she exited the vehicle and was heading to Regent Street when four men on bicycles attempted to attack her.
Sergeant Liverpool, who was nearby on his motorcycle, challenged the gunmen who opened fire, hitting him twice.
Although badly wounded, Liverpool returned fire, forcing the gunmen to abort their attack and escape empty-handed.
He then collapsed.
Several of his sergeant’s colleagues, along with relatives, converged at the hospital on hearing word of the shooting.
Police suspect that the gunmen came from an area not far from the scene of the attack.
Last night ranks were scouring Tiger Bay last night. None of the gunmen had been apprehended.
