Eight years after winning their first Mayor’s Cup football title, Camptown FC turned in a determined effort to clinch this year’s edition, defeating Fruta Conquerors 2-0 when action in that tournament concluded at the Georgetown Football Club ground Thursday evening.
Peter Parks slammed in the 12th minute and was emulated by Devon Forde in the 88th minute to send the Cambellville based team into euphoria minutes after the final whistle had sounded.
The winners surged ahead after Reshawn Sandiford dribbled the ball down the left wing and crossed to Parks who headed the ball past the grasping hands of the Conquerors’ custodian. Despite aggressive exchanges neither of the two sides managed to score another goal.
The battle for honours continued into the second half with the eventual winners demonstrating more hunger and dexterity.
The final nail in Conquerors’ coffin was driven when Forde’s sparkling effort breached the opposition’s custodian but not before the winning team endured a scare after a free kick taken by Conqueror’s Eon Alleyne almost breeched Camptown’s goal after the ball deflected and deceived the keeper. He quickly adjusted and effected an immaculate save that in the end thwarted Alleyne’s effort and saw his team prevailing.
Coach of the winning team, Joseph Wilson complimented his team while admitting that it was indeed a tough game.
Earlier, he had promised to spearhead the win while admitting that the Camptown team had had a tough year and had not won a major tournament for some time now. The Mayor’s Cup has been sweet compensation for the long wait.
Meanwhile, in the third place playoff, Sheldon Holder tucked in a 39th minute goal to earn Pele the third prize against Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United and sweet revenge for their loss in 2009.
From the onset Pele seemed to be the team with the required hunger for the prize with a sustained mode of attack that saw them infiltrating the opposition’s goal area very early in the match.
Alpha, in the meantime, were content to distribute the ball while systematically weaving their way to the opposition’s goal. As the players’ blood warmed, Pele invaded Alpha’s danger area and a goal mouth scrimmage resulted in their first success. Alpha’s game improved somewhat and their strikers attacked with venom. They were presented with a wonderful opportunity to equalize the situation when Shawn Bishop received a dolly of an offering from the right wing. He trapped the ball squarely in front of the goal with not even the goalie to challenge the shot. The ghosts of the match against the Puerto Rican club team River Plate, somehow returned and instead of tapping the ball between the uprights, Bishop somehow managed to spoon it over the top bar.
Dwight Peters fared no better a few minutes later when he collected the ball and thundered down the left flank. His attempt to convert failed after he found himself in the most awkward of positions.
In the meantime, there was no letup from Pele and their defensive tactics confined Alpha to just near misses.
Coach of the Alpha team, Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover conveyed his disappointment at his team’s showing but assured the fans that there would be improvement for the impending Caribbean Football Union (CFU) encounter.
