Former National Chess Champion Wendell Meusa will face off with his successor, Taffin Khan when action in the Caribbean Container INC. (C.C.I.) Easter Chess tournament continues at the KEI-SHAR’S Sports Club over this weekend.
Already tongues are wagging and it is anybody’s guess as to who will capture the honours. Muesa, the 2009 champion had distinguished himself among his senior counterparts while Khan is a former junior champion. Khan then sought to win the national senior championship after losing eligibility to compete in the junior category by dint of age.
The two players had been on a collision course for the national championship last year but the situation petered out when Muesa was disqualified from participating after the executives of the local chess federation instituted a six months ban on him, citing indiscipline. The former national champion was given the option of proving certain allegations he had leveled at the executive of the Federation or retract his statements. He refused to do either and the ban was enforced.
Khan, a former junior champion went on to take the championship and ever since then heated speculation of who was the better had ensued. The impending battle has captured the imagination of the pundits and speculation is high as to who will prevail.
On paper, there is not much to separate the two players; Meusa is rated at 1928 by the World Chess Federation (FIDE) while Khan enjoys a rating of 1802. Both players have attained an unassailable lead and the result of this highly anticipated match-up will most likely determine the winner of the C.C.I trophy.
Meanwhile, there are still three rounds to be completed and both Khan and Meusa remain undefeated with four points apiece.
The fourth game of the seven round tournament was completed on Tuesday evening last and Meusa added the scalp of Shiv Nandalall (1715) to his list while Khan won by a walkover after his opponent, Alex Joseph failed to show up for their game.
The other points standings after four rounds are Pierre Boucher (3 ½), Shiv Nandalall (1 ½), David Khan (1386) and Alex Joseph (1 point apiece) with Haatram Parbatt and Chino Chung in the cellar without a point.
Meanwhile, North Georgetown Secondary student, Suhai Feng continues to impress in the junior category and is yet to be beaten after the completion of four rounds. There are still three remaining rounds in the junior category and Feng is the hot favourite to clinch the crown.
The senior section of the competition is FIDE rated and those players that are not yet rated by this organization may be able to clinch such an accolade if they manage to defeat any of the current FIDE rated players. The four FIDE rated players are Meusa, Taffin and David Khan and Nandalall.
