The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health conducted a mini health fair outside of the GRA’s building on Main Street, Georgetown, yesterday, where persons were given the opportunity to learn more about “keeping fit and remaining healthy”.
At the location while visiting the various booths, Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, told this newspaper that the event was one of the activities scheduled throughout “Occupational Health & Safety Month” where the focus is being placed on both employees and their employers to ensure that health and safety practices are enforced at all times.
Dr. Ramsammy explained that knowledge of illnesses which shorten the life span, and result in persons living miserably, should be provided to the public so that they become more aware of the issues which they could face at any point in time.
Kaieteur News was informed that the booths facilitated those interested in testing their blood pressure, body weight and height, free of cost. Also, there was a testing site for persons to check their sugar levels, and all booths had officials from the Health Ministry present to advise persons on the issues they were interested in.
The Health Minister stated that the major contributor to chronic diseases which mostly affect the Guyanese population is the lifestyle of citizens, with some developing bad habits such as smoking, not eating properly, drinking excessive alcohol and being physically inactive.
He stressed that many of these “lifestyle diseases” are totally preventable. Every year, over $600M is spent in medications for diabetes and hypertension, with over 60% of deaths in Guyana resulting from these chronic diseases.
One of GRA’s managers, Dawn Pickett, told Kaieteur News that her company did not have enough staffing to conduct such a fair on its own, hence a request was made to the Ministry of Health to assist them in the activity. Pickett called on more work entities to facilitate such activities on a regular basis to ensure that their staff and persons in the area have the opportunity of becoming aware of serious health issues.
