Boxing pundits in the Ancient County are busy gearing up for two nights of fistic fury on Saturday and Sunday when the Boxing Gyms in Berbice stage an inter club two nights elimination tournament.
The competition is being held in an effort to select a team to participate in the upcoming National Novices competition for May 5-8 in Georgetown.
The two-night competition will be held at two different venues. Saturday’s action will be held at the Sandvort Community Centre in West Canje, while the final night of action will take place at the New Amsterdam Town Hall. Action on both nights is expected to get cracking at 18:30 hrs.
Four Gyms are down to compete namely: the Pocket Rocket boxing Gym out of New Amsterdam, which is being coached by Orland Pocket Rocket Rogers, Central New Amsterdam Police Station Boxing Gym, which is under the tutelage Abid ‘Shanghai’ Alli, the newly formed Tiger Eye Boxing Gym out of Sandvort West Canje, under the guidance of Former National Light Heavy champion Al Thomas and the Rose Hall Jammers Boxing Gym of Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, trained by Eon Cort.
Most of the top amateur boxers in the county are expected to participate and according to reports, all of the gyms have been hard at training and are looking forward to have a full compliment of fighters on the Berbice squad.
Among those expected to be in action are Joel Williamson, Jamal Eastman, Boutar Seeraj, Jamal Brisport, Eon Clarke, Travis Fraser and Michael April among others.
Female fighter Rena David is also expected to be in action in what is expected to be a mouth watering event.
There over 20 bouts listed for both nights, and Boxing fans are expected top come out in their numbers to witness competition in the various categories including bouts for U-15, starters, and seniors among others.
Former National Amateur and Professional Multi weight champion, Jeff Roberts is the GABA Vice President with responsibility for Boxing in Berbice.
According to the coaches, their boxers are well prepared and will be going all out to take away the title. Apart from making this competition an Annual affair, the clubs are hoping to hold a boxing competition at least four times a year.
The next activity in Berbice is the slated for the New Amsterdam Town Hall in November.
