Two-year-old Melissa Benjamin, of Grant Kitty, Lower Pomeroon River, died after she and her four-year-old sister went for a dip in a nearby canal.
According to reports reaching this newspaper, the toddler and her sister along with an elder cousin were bathing in a nearby canal, around, 2pm, when tragedy struck.
This newspaper understands that the toddler’s parents left to go into the back dam earlier in the day.
At the time of the tragedy the mother had returned and was cooking. Family members, on missing the child, became frantic and conducted a search. Moments later the toddler’s body was discovered.
The body was taken to Charity were she was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. A report was also lodged at the Charity outpost.
