After escaping from the Camp Street Penitentiary for well over two months, law enforcement ranks were able to re-arrest 18-year-old murder accused, Eddy Williams.
At the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday he was slapped with an escape from lawful custody charge by Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton.
Williams, wearing only a boxer shorts and a striped jersey, stood nervously and unrepresented in the court.
According to police records, while Williams was on remand at the Camp Street jail, on February 21, for the capital offence of murder, he made good his escape.
Evasion from lawful custody is an indictable matter which is not bailable. Following the reading of the charge, Williams beseeched the court in a shaky voice to be sent to the Brickdam Police Station holding facility.
“Me Worship, I don’t want to go back to Camp Street Jail. Please send me to Brickdam lockups.”
Magistrate Octive-Hamilton however informed Williams that it is not his right to decide where he must be kept after being implicated in an unlawful offence.
Police had only recently confined Williams, who is accused of stabbing 29-year-old Jermaine Jones to death at Ruimzeight on November 30, 2010.
He was remanded after appearing before Magistrate Nyasha Williams-Hatmin at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court. Williams is the cousin of the victim’s reputed wife.
A manhunt was launched by Prison officials and their counterparts in the Joint Services to recapture Williams who resided at lot 37 Back Street, Ruimzeight, West Coast Demerara. Police and army ranks had questioned the fugitive’s close relations.
Even though prison authorities are suggesting that the inmate escaped by climbing the eastern fence surrounding the main penal institution during a downpour, Kaieteur News understands that the man calmly walked out through the main gate of the prison in broad daylight.
According to reports reaching this newspaper, Williams usually works in the prison kitchen.
A source said that when prison authorities carried out a tally of inmates around 18:00 hours the same day, Williams was not found.
Kaieteur News was also told that two prison wardens who were posted near the area where Williams escaped were placed under close arrest. After being interdicted the wardens were called back to resume normal duty.
Questions were raised as to why a murder accused was allowed to work in the prison kitchen. Conversely, a senior officer who was in charge of the prison the day Williams escaped has since been transferred to the New Amsterdam Prisons.
