Dear Editor,
I wonder why some of us seem to be surprised at the inevitable! Any of us who thought that Donald Ramotar was going to show up for the “Mother of all Debates” with Mr. Granger and Mr. Ramjattan are either super optimists or need to have our heads examined. However, I can empathise with the optimists, given the dire state of our country! A drowning man (in this case, nation) will clutch at straws!
The PPP are anti-people, anti-nationalist and they have demonstrated that they are also like the schoolyard bully. They will always run and seek refuge when confronted by their targets for bullyism, in this case, all Guyanese in their bad books, which means, all Guyanese who speak, act, and otherwise see them in a negative light. The debates must go on! We must not waste time waiting for them.
Let them know that their presence is necessary. Let them say when they are available to debate, and they will be included when they are available. I can assure you, this will be never! Or they can prove me wrong! If we wait on them to get the debates started there will be no debates and the people need to be informed by all candidates of their plans to revitalize and save the country.
Let us begin the public discussions with those leaders who are available. Let us find a moderator who knows the environment and has the ability to engage the candidates in a robust, stringent exchange on all the issues confronting the Guyanese people. If the PPP refuses to debate, too bad for them! This is when their supporters will see them for who they really are, a party which does not have respect for the Guyanese people, including their own supporters. We have a number of persons who will acquit themselves well doing this on behalf of the people.
So, let’s get it on! Let the people hear what everyone has to say, with or without the PPP!
Hubert Wong
