East Coast Demerara police are currently trying to solve yet another brutal murder in their district. Reports are that some time around 18:30 hours on Tuesday police and relatives discovered the body of 68-year-old Sukhdai Bacchus at her Lot 50 Vryheids’ Lust North home.
According to reports the woman’s throat was slashed and it is believed that she was raped.
The dead woman’s nephew, Bisram Balram, who lives next door, said that the first sign that he and his wife got that something was amiss was when the woman didn’t respond to calls on Tuesday afternoon.
Balram said that normally he and his wife would leave their home early in the morning but upon their return in the evenings they would check on his aunt since she lived alone. The man said that his wife called him while he was on his way home on Tuesday.
“Me wife tell me she called but she aint get no answer and when she look over in the yard they noticed something dripping from the floor boards to the ground below and that it look like blood,”.
Fearing the worst, the man said that he did not bother to venture into his aunt’s yard but instead he called other relatives to the area and then went to the police to inform them of his suspicion.
The man said that the police then accompanied him back to house where they made the discovery. The woman’s body was removed and taken to the Lyken Funeral home where it is awaiting a post mortem examination.
Balram said that he was not allowed to go into the house but he was told that the place was ransacked suggesting that the perpetrators may have taken valuables.
This newspaper was told that from all indications there was some forced entry via the back of the house. When police arrived the woman’s gate was properly secured.
However, Balram said that he could not say what was taken from the woman’s house since he was not aware of what she had. The woman had been living alone in the very house for most of her life.
Balram said that the woman was never married nor had any children but her nieces and nephews took care of her whenever it was necessary.
At the scene yesterday there was a large pool of blood under the woman’s house. Neighbours had also gathered at her relatives’ house offering their sympathy. One neighbour said that she last saw Sukhdai on Monday; however police said they believe that the woman was killed since Monday. The woman’s relatives said they last saw her alive on Sunday.
