“Everyone has a stake and can play a role in preventing some of the most serious and damaging violations of vulnerable individuals – this is not family or private business,” said Acting British Commissioner, Simon Bond, when he visited Help and Shelter’s Homestretch Avenue headquarters on Tuesday.
The envoy asserted that although he is impressed with the efforts that are being directed by the Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) to the issue of domestic and sexual abuse as well as violence, which is reported in the press, the problem is not one that is about to dissipate.
“I’m really impressed by what the counsellors, staff and volunteers do to help some of the most vulnerable people in the society, including people who find it very difficult to come forward and young children who need such sensitive and expert attention.
Sadly, this is not a problem that is going away and it’s not a problem just for NGOs or for Governments.”
In recognition of the dedication of Help and Shelter, the British High Commission recently provided the NGO with funding to support its counselling services.
The support has enabled the entity to incorporate five counsellors to continue to provide their services to survivors/victims of domestic violence and facilitated the reproduction and distribution of public awareness materials.
During his visit, Bond discussed the counselling programme at length and was able to learn more about the vital work which Help and Shelter offers.
“I’m delighted that the High Commission has been able to support Help and Shelter. We are all horrified by the awful cases… of domestic and sexual abuse, and violence we read about in the press.
Help and Shelter is doing vital work to tackle these problems.”
He further noted, “Of course, Help and Shelter relies on goodwill and I hope very much that they can continue to get the essential support they need to do their work from corporate sponsors, funding agencies and government.”
Help and Shelter provides extended hours of face-to-face counselling sessions for existing and new clients, mostly women and girls.
The NGO also offers similar counselling sessions to victims and provides comprehensive court support services, preparing clients for court procedures and attending court sessions with those pursuing legal action.
Additionally, hotline counselling is available to victims and those at risk, as well as practical advice and referrals to other institutions are provided.
Among its support mechanism is a shelter for victims of domestic and sexual abuse.
