$1M on offer as Fruta Conquerors battle Sunburst Camptown
The Mayor’s Cup Football Championship will come to a close tonight at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground when Fruta Conquerors clash with Sunburst Camptown in the Grand Finale.
A highly competitive contest is anticipated between these two sides that sprung surprises on the pre-tournament favourites to advance to the championship game and fans are in for a treat as they battle for the prestigious title and the one million dollar first prize put up by President Bharrat Jagdeo.
Camptown will be spearheaded by Nigel Codrington, Troy Prescod, Oswald Cornette, Reshawn Sandiford, Jamal Greaves and Orlando Gilgeous. Codrington will look to create waves at the front to torment the Conquerors defence, while veteran Prescod along with Gilgeous will add the additional component at the back to thwart their opponents’ attacks.
Conquerors will depend on the services of Trevon Lythcott, Dellon Williams, Jolyon Harry, Eon Alleyne, Colin Edwards, Lester Peters and Jomo Hinds.
Williams and Peters have been around for sometime and their experience will be priceless to steering Conquerors, while the youth and enthusiasm of Lythcott and Alleyne and company should pose a serious threat and an entertaining contest is expected.
Apart from the feature contest, two other games will be played, the third place playoff between Alpha United and Pele is the second match of the night, while the evening’s programme will open with a contest that will see the Guyana Defence Force colliding with New Amsterdam United of Berbice.
Fans are set to have added comfort, promised by the organisers of the Mayor’s Cup Football championship. They will have the comfort of more seats, better lights and improved lavatory facilities for the ladies and a large turn out is expected.
Fans can use both the North Road and Regent Street entrances to the ground and admission fee is $1,000.
The runner-up of this tournament will receive $500,000 compliments of Body Max Gym.
The sum of $200,000 is the third prize for that ‘grudge match’ between Alpha and Pele, while the loser of that game will collect $100,000.
Among the sponsors for what has been an excellent tournament are Digicel, providers of Guyana’s bigger, better mobile phone network, Banks DIH and Giftland Office Max while National Pride, General Equipment, Gold Target Export, Bakewell, CIDI, Nazar Mohamed, Rusal, John Fernandes, Courtney Benn, Muneshwar’s Travel Agency, BK International and the Guyana Lottery Company are also on board as corporate partners.
