Current national chess champion and former champ Taffin Khan and Wendell Meusa respectively, have won all three of their games, to lead the pack when the first round of the Caribbean Container Inc. Easter Chess tournament for junior and senior players concluded at the Kei-shar’s Sports Club Hadfield Street, over the past weekend.
By dint of those wins, the players are on a collision course after finishing on 3 points apiece and the battle for championship honours in the seven round tournament is expected to be extremely fierce.
Further, these two players would have to be wary of Pierre Boucher whose first day returns of 2 wins and one draw has earned him 2 1/2 points and places him alarmingly close to assuming the lead position.
The other points standing in the senior category are Shiv Nandalall (1 1/2 points), Alex Joseph (1 point), while David Khan, Haatram Parbat and Chino Chung are tied in the cellar on zero points.
Meanwhile, after four rounds, Suhai Feng of North Georgetown Secondary School leads the junior category with 4 points. Anthony Drayton of Government Technical Institute, Rashad Hussain of Mae’s School and Saeed Ali of Richard Ishmael Secondary School are bundled in the cellar on 2 points apiece.
The juniors will conclude their tournament over the coming weekend when the remaining rounds will be played on Saturday and Sunday, while the seniors played their fourth round yesterday.
Nineteen players, including 11 juniors are competing for the top prize. The presentation of prizes will take place immediately after the end of the tournament.
