– Grant reaches O-45 Singles final
Berbician Godfrey Lowden teamed up with Omar Persaud to grab their second title in this year’s MACORP Open Tennis Championships which continued on Monday evening, at the Pegasus Hotel Hardcourts.
Over-35 Double s champions Godfrey Lowden / Omar Persaud (right) pose for Kaieteur Sport following their win over Carlos Adams / Gilbert Barckoy on Monday evening.
Lowden / Persaud had earlier successfully defended their Over-45 crown, before claiming the O-35 title after beating the pair of Gilbert Barckoy / Carlos Adams 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) in a clash that took a tie-break to decide the winner.
In Men’s O-45 Singles semi-final action, veteran Rudy Grant once again showed what a stubborn opponent he is to get past after eliminating Japan’s Sakae Yamada in straight sets 7-5, 6-4 to book a place in the final against Albert Madramootoo.
In the Lowden / Persaud versus Adams / Barckoy affair, the contest broke loose when the latter pair secured a break in the eighth game to go 5-3 up, before Adams held serve to claim the opening stanza.
In the second set, the duel remained level on serve, but in the sixth game, Persaud / Lowden managed to break serve and take an important 4-2 advantage.
Even though they were broken back in the game that followed immediately, they held their nerves to win and level the encounter and set up a decider.
It was indeed a battle of resolve as both teams raised their level of play with Adams / Barckoy executing some vicious backhand slices that proved difficult to handle, while Lowden delivered some rasping forehand winners and the sprinkling of fans were truly entertained.
Both pairs held serve at times under difficulty, but the game went into a tie-break and immediately Persaud / Lowden raced to a 2-1 lead, before Adams / Barckoy responded in kind to level at 3-3.
A blistering forehand crosscourt winner by Lowden which was followed by a delicate sliced volley at the net from Persaud gave them a crucial 5-3 ascendancy, but even then the contest was not over as Adams / Barckoy found their composure to win the next two points and level the battle.
However, Lowden / Persaud clearly seemed the hungrier of the teams and won the next two points to emerge winners.
