– explosions heard
Police at Lethem in the Rupununi will certainly have to rely on civilian assistance to patrol the community for this year’s Rodeo, following the complete destruction by fire of one of their two Land Rovers early yesterday morning.
The vehicle was discovered on fire at around 03:00 hours by the mechanic at whose premises it had been taken to be repaired.
According to reports, the land rover, which had developed mechanical problems, was on Sunday taken to the mechanic who had done previous work on police vehicles.
In the wee hours yesterday, the mechanic contacted the police at Lethem via telephone and informed them that he had heard three explosions and upon checking, he saw the vehicle on fire.
There was nothing he could do as the vehicle was already destroyed.
The cause of the fire is so far unknown and arson is not being ruled out.
Divisional Commander David Ramnarine told Kaieteur News that his investigators will be assisted by a member of the Guyana Fire Service who will be going into the area.
According to Ramnarine, the recent destruction of the Land Rover adds to the desperate situation at Lethem since the only other police vehicle has been inoperable for some time.
And with the Rupununi Rodeo almost on hand, patrol duties will be severely affected.
However, Commander Ramnarine is confident that civilian help will not be too difficult to obtain. “We will probably have to get civilian assistance.
I am convinced that in the circumstances, civilians will help,” he said.
