As young boxers prepare to don gloves for the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) National Novices Boxing Championships from May 6-8 next, those from Berbice are expected to form a united force to participate in the tournament. The tournament would feature the skills of those boxers that are venturing into the ring for the first time.
Kaieteur Sport spoke with Charles Roberts, one of the trainers charged with the development of the boxers out of Berbice and he said that he is confident that his charges would make an impression at the tournament. The trainers in that Region are leaving nothing to chance and have planned a tournament scheduled for this Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th at the Sandfordt Village Community Centre and the New Amsterdam Town Hall respectively.
Mr. Roberts explained that this tournament would serve two purposes; to give the boxers an opportunity to sharpen their skills prior to the national championships and to assist the selectors in choosing the best representation from Berbice. He intimated that more than 30 boxers will be participating in the tournament and thereafter twelve of them would be selected to represent the Ancient County in the above mentioned tournament.
The Berbice boxers would be drawn from the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym (PRBG), Rose Hall Bombers (RB), Central New Amsterdam (CAN) and Tiger Eye (TE), out of Sandfordt.
Novice boxers, because they are at the earliest learning stages, usually provide unbridled action and the organizers are encouraging the public to support them.
Other than the Berbice gyms, the tournament would attract pugilists from the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF), Harpy Eagles (HE), Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym (ALBG) Port Kaituma Boxing Gym (PKBG), Ricola and other gyms countrywide. Trainers are intensifying preparations in anticipation of the fierce rivalry. The boxers weigh in at a venue to be announced on May 5.
