Forty-years of rich history will unfold during the ensuing days as dozens of past and present Pele FC players return to these shores to celebrate another milestone in the Club’s continuing history.
Always known to have youth teams of a high pedigree, the New York Chapter of the club has put together their resources to run off what is anticipated to be an exciting Under-17 knock-out tournament featuring eight (8) of the best clubs in the city.
The ongoing Len’s Craft Optical/Sunburst Orange Juice Under-15 League, the brain child of a past Pele player, Alistair Parris had evoked many a debate among other age group players who have been constantly enquiring about competitions within their age limit. This tournament, which will have some attractive prizes at stake, will at least for the moment, quell some of the anxiety and allow players and fans to enjoy some more youth football which has been on the down low in the city.
The Georgetown Football Association (GFA) will soon kick in their own programme which will make the season much busier for players at all levels. The competing clubs in this Under-17 KO are Pele, Sunburst Camptown, Georgetown Football Club, BK International Western Tigers, Fruta Conquerors, Renaissance, Flamingo and Santos.
Games will be played simultaneously at the GFC and Tucville Grounds tomorrow. Pele will come up against Renaissance at GFC from 15:00hrs with the feature game between GFC and Western Tigers from 17:00hrs.
Over at the Tucville Ground, Santos will come up against Camptown in opening play; home team Conquerors will match skills against Flamingo in main play.
The respective winners will advance to the semifinals on Saturday at the GFC Ground from 09:00hrs with the grand final and third place encounters scheduled for next Tuesday also at the GFC Ground. (Franklin Wilson)
