– Male team in, Female team out: – says Patterson
Guyana has apparently confirmed its participation at the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Championships, opting to compete with a male team in the premier regional competition, which is slated for July 25-August 5 in the Bahamas.
President of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF), David Patterson confirmed that Guyana will be competing with a male team only yesterday. He informed that efforts to send the Women’s team proved futile owed to lack of funding.
“Guyana’s male team will be attending only; unfortunately the female team will not be going! It was a difficult decision not to send both teams; however, a proposal from the Women Basketball Association to secure funding for females out of the United States was unsuccessful,” Patterson said via email yesterday, which was the deadline to confirm participation.
“We are hopeful to secure greatly reduced flights from the newly opened airline,” he added. The GABF head was speaking about the possibility of the team flying with RedJet, which is offering unusually low airfares for its services.
Guyana last attended the CBC Championships in 2007 when an entire United-States-based male team represented the country since none of the local players received visas to compete in Puerto Rico. A female team also represented Guyana in Puerto Rico.
The GABF is currently in the final stage of its National Club Championships, which will be used to select the local players that are to be a part of the squad. None of the Linden-based clubs made it to the Final Four stage of the competition. (Edison Jefford)
