When Camptown FC faced off with Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United in the quarterfinal stage of the Mayor’s Cup football competition about 2 weeks ago, the pundits had already buried Camptown, saying that ‘The Hammers’ would have pounded them into submission.
Reshawn Sandiford’s 69th minute success with support from Nigel Codrington, who breached the opposition’s goal in the 73rd minute, put paid to Alpha’s hopes and sent them packing.
Pele next took to the field and was also tipped to win against Fruta Conquerors. Vurlon Mills proved to be a thorn in their sides and his double in the 15th and 35th minutes propelled the latter team to the finals, setting up a highly anticipated thriller with Camptown when these two teams square off on April 21.
Word is out that Mills has since left to participate in the Trinidad leagues and if there is any truth to this then Camptown will breathe easier. They must, however, take note that Jomo Hinds is still a clear and present danger. The in form striker had shattered the hopes of the Guyana Defence Force with strikes in the 57th and 88th minutes to send the soldiers packing. Then there are other potent players the likes of central mid fielder, Troy Prescod, midfielder, Lance Rawleston and forwards Peter Parks and Devon Forde. With such a wide array of classy players Camptown will enjoy the luxury of choice selections. Regardless of the final eleven selected for duties, football fans could expect a keenly contested match laden with action.
The team from Campbellville Housing Scheme will also be posing an intimidating lineup and if Fruta is to remain the ‘Conquerors’ they will have to pull off all the stops. Naturally, Camptown would back their chances of lifting the prestigious prize on the boots of strikers, Nigel ‘Powers’ Codrington. The final team has not yet been picked but coach Joseph Wilson has hinted on a strong squad that also includes Peter Parks and Devon Forde, two potent strikers.
Defence players, Orlando Gilgeous, Leon Muir and Sheldon Shepard are sure to be among the frontline players for the finals, while Troy Prescod and Sheldon Shepard can shore up the midfield position.
“We are confident of taking this one,” pronounced Wilson when Kaieteur Sport sought his comment. Indeed, this boast should not be taken lightly when one notes that Camptown has won this competition twice, in 2003 and 2004. However, despite such a formidable lineup the Campbellville team has not won anything substantial for over three years. Mr. Wilson vows to break that jinx.
The stage is set; two teams, one trophy, who will cart off the spoils? That answer would only be answered when the whistle sounds on April 21. Don’t you dare miss the action. The teams are competing for a first prize of one million dollars, while the runners up cart off half that amount. The third and fourth place finishers receive two hundred thousand and one hundred thousand dollars respectively.
