– Caesar upsets Ageday, James sizzles
If there was any doubt surrounding the selection of Stephan James for this weekend’s Junior CARIFTA Games in Jamaica, the quarter-miler ensured that he remove all scepticism at the Police Sports Club Ground yesterday afternoon.
James, the new 400m phenom in Guyana, ran 49.20 seconds at Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) Digicel sponsored National U-23 Championships to beat a more established Patrick King (50.10) in the race. Bevon Noble ran 51.20 for third place.
James was happy to turn the tables on King, who had beaten him in the 200m. King had 21.70 in that race while James ran 21.90 for second. Dellon DeAbreu was third in 22.00 seconds in one of the biggest rivalries to have emerged during the competition.
At the end of the day, Police Sports Club amassed 339 points to retain their overall title while the Guyana Defence Force was second with 204 points. Brave Stars was third with 160 points while Mercury Fast Laners finished fourth with 154 points.
Upper Demerara ended with 50 points, Royal Youth Movement 24 points, Enmore and Ruralites 15 points and Linden Police six points to round off the performance of those clubs that competed yesterday in the second annual national U-23 Championships.
Returning to the on-field action, Upper Demerara’s Winston Caesar ran his personal best time to win the 100m. Caesar ran 10.40 seconds to win the event while Cortez Fraser was second in 10.60 and DeAbreu third in 11.30 seconds.
Junior CARIFTA Games selectee, Chavez Ageday choked out of the race at about 60m into the event, holding his hamstring, which suggested an injury. Ageday came under pressure just after Caesar, Fraser and DeAbreu had surged on him following the start.
The race would have been an interesting battle had Ageday not succumbed to injury since he had never run under 10.40 seconds in his career. Ageday, James, Trevon George, Nathanie Giddings, Jevina Straker and Melissa Byass were all named on the CARIFTA team.
George won the 800m race in 2:00.0 with Kevin Bayley second in 2:01.10 and Akeem Benjamin third in 2:05.00. He placed second in the 1500m behind Tyshon Bentick, who was second while Devon Barrington finished third in that race.
Giddings won the 5000m in 16:44.20 while Bentick was second in 17:18.30 and Jamaal Chisholm third in 18:00.00.
In the female events, sprint sensation, Neisa Allen swept these events. Allen won the 100m in 12.20 seconds ahead of Tiffany Carto (12.30) and Latisha Myles (12.60). She won the 200m in 25.40 seconds while Carto (25.70) and Alita Moore (25.90) were second and third respectively in that race.
Allen then returned to win the 400m in 1:01.40 with Nadine Rodrigues finishing second in 1:05.90 and Straker third in 1:10.70. Distance queen, Alika Morgan had restricted Morgan to the second position in both the 800m and 1500m events yesterday.
Morgan ran 2:25.00 to win the 800m ahead of Straker (2:26.30) while Jenella Jonas was third in 2:31.50. Morgan ran 4:58.90 to win the 1500m ahead of Straker (5:01.10) and Adama Roberts, who was third in 5:32.90.
