Minister of Housing and Water, Irfaan Ali during the commissioning of three $29.5 million multi-purpose centers reiterated that his Ministry will be constructing four such edifices which he promised would be used to promote social cohesion among residents.
But the center at Parfait Harmonie is far from serving its anticipated purpose.
During Kaieteur News visits to the community, villagers expressed doubt as to whether they will ever be able to use the structure. Asked if any community body is formed to organized suitable activities for the benefit of residents, Pamela Hall, a villager responded in the negative.
Pulmattie Ramdass, another resident, related that no event has been held in the centre since its completion.
Most of the villagers who spoke to this publication expressed the view that Minister Ali should have appointed responsible persons in the community to plan and organise activities in the community.
Ramdass made references to the Minister’s speech at the opening of the said structure, when he said that the building will promote societal unity among inhabitants. The woman reported that all the building is attracting are vandals who are removing parts of the structure.
And a similar multi-purpose centre at Area ‘C’ Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara seems to be suffering a similar fate.
Residents claim that the playfield is a swamp and would render the centre useless.
According to them, “Children would be unable to use the playfield which is being used as a fish pond by some.”
Similar facilities were also constructed at Belle West, Glasgow in Canal Number Two.
Each structure has five rooms, a stage and an auditorium. Additionally, a 40-foot long pavilion is attached to each building, which is also provided with sanitary facilities.
